Biographical / Historical
The Committee on the Book of Worship was appointed by Executive Committee of the E & R Church in 1936. Members of the committee were: Dr. George W. Richards, Chair, Paul Reid Pontius, Secretary, Scott F. Brenner, Charles E. Creitz, Purd E. Dietz, Fred Frankenfeld, H.H. Lohans, H. Richard Niebuhr, Henry C. Nott, George L. Scherger, H.J.Schick, Robert C. Stanger, Scott R. Wagner. The committee submitted the published provisional Forms for use by the churches to the General Synod of 1940. The Forms for the regular services and special liturgical acts were to be reviewed by a second committee appointed by the General Synod after which they were approved for provisional use during 1940-1942. During this period Synods, clergy, consistories, and associations of clergy were requested to provide suggestions for changes and additions. All suggestions were to be sent to the presidents of the Synods who was to present them at the regular annual meetings. Reports of suggestions and additions from the annual meetings of the Synods were to be forwarded to the secretary of the Committee on Book of Worship. The completed Forms for use were then submitted to General Synod in 1942 for final approval and the first approved edition of the Book of Worship was published that same year. Having completed its work, the Committee was dismissed.
These records were transferred to the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society by order of the last General Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1959.
