Biographical / Historical

Reformed preaching first took place around 1750 in this church. At that time it was a log structure. After the congregation was organized in 1753, services were conducted in German and held regularly. In 1781 a larger building was constructed but it wasn't plastered until 1832. During the building period the church was without a minister. It also was without stoves or fire for a long period of time. In 1867 a third church was erected on the original site. The church school was added in 1951. The adjoining property on the west was owned by Jacob Sherman, and it was he who gave the name by which the church was known best in later years.
