Biographical / Historical
Heidelberg Reformed Church was organized in 1868 when members of Christ Church, 16th and Green Sts., objected to the use of the new 1866 Order of Worship and left to form their own congregation. They met at Spring Garden Hall, then in a rented building on Melon Street, until a frame chapel was built at 19th and Oxford Sts. in 1872. The chapel was replaced by a new building in 1881. In 1925 they sold the property and merged with the Fern Rock Mission at Broad and Grange Sts. A new church was completed in 1927. Heidelberg had founded five mission churches. One of them, Bethany Tabernacle at 20th and Dauphin Sts., elected to merge with Heidelberg in 1929. The church disbanded in 1981.
