Biographical / Historical
Founded in 1720, the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church is the oldest operating United Church of Christ congregation. During the Revolutionary War, the church served as an army hospital. In 1790, the present church building was constructed, and in 1848 the congregation purchased a pipe organ. More renovations were made in 1869, including the addition of a bell and steeple. In 1878-79 the church's address changed from Swamp, PA to New Hanover, PA. Again in 1900-01 remodeling took place. In 1925, lightning destroyed the steeple and other church property. In 1963, a christian education wing was added. During the early 1990s, the steeple was replaced, and in 1999, the church organ was rebuilt.
