Biographical / Historical

In 1850, Elias Fair (Lutheran) and Henry Knepper (Reformed) began holding occasional services int he Fairfield School of Summit Township. A Union church was later built in November 1854 and the members were organized as Amity Church of Fairfield. Denominational lines were disregarded except for confirmation. In 1865, the Lutheran adopted the name St. James Lutheran Church of Meyers Mills and in 1874, the Reformed congregation purchased the Lutheran interest in the church property and changed the church name to Amity Reformed Church. The Lutherans continued the worship in the school building until the completion of their church building in 1877 and the new church was called Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Reformed congregation worshipped in the old Amity Church until 1888.
