Biographical / Historical
Founded in August 1885 as First German Evangelical Lutheran Church St. Paul's Church of Hornellsville, the church began because German immigrants wanted a church with services held in their mother tongue. Originally services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Strack in what is referred to as Strack's Hall. The cornerstone for a church building was laid on July 4, 1886. In 1910 the church changed its name to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. A schism developed around 1910 and the church joined the Evangelical Synod of North America in 1916. In 1924, the bell tower was rebuilt and bells were installed. In December of 1924, there was an extensive church fire, and in 1935, the church suffered from flood damage. The church was renovated during the late 1930s. Two small fires took place in 1939. Renovations also took place during the late 1950s and a Sunday School building was purchased in 1960.
