Biographical / Historical

The Lykens Valley Charge was composed of Peace Church, Berrysburg; St. Peter's (Hoffman's) Church, Lykens, RD.; Salem Church, Elizabethville and Simeon's Church, Gratz. In 1973 the charge was dissolved. Pastors who served this charge include:

Stump (student supply) 1960-???? James G. Reed St. Peter's Church, Lykens was organized in 1771 and known as Hoffman's Reformed Church. A log church was built in 1792, and in 1887, a new church building was erected. The church burned in 1958, and a new brick building was constructed in 1959. Pastors include: 1780-1790 Samuel Dubendorf 1791-1799 Anthony Houtz 1800-1805 unknown supplies 1805-1805 Rev. Broffel of Canada 1805-1807 Hendell 1807-1811 Greestweit; Helfenstein; Glovinger; Smith; Deifenbeck; Becker; Houtz (supplies) 1811-1812 Phillip Gloninger 1812-1819 James R. Riley 1819-1843 Isaac Gerhart 1843-1856 John A. Leis 1856-1857 R. A. Fisher 1857-1865 Ephriam Keiffer 1865-1872 Jacob Kehm 1872-1889 W. G. Engle 1889-1890 Samuel Kuhn 1891-1973 see List of Charge Pastors Simeon's Church, Gratz was founded in 1822 as a union church. In 1883, a new steeple and new pews were added. In 1912, a pipe organ was purchased, and in 1932, the interior of the church was redecorated. In 1969, Simeon's merged with the Lutheran Church. Reformed Pastors include: 1822-1844 Isaac Gerhart 1844-1856 Adam Leiss 1856-1857 Richard Fisher 1857-1864 Ephriam Kieffer 1863-1872 Jacob Kehm 1872-1889 William Engle 1899-1969 See List of Charge Pastors Salem Church, Elizabethville was organized in 1835. Until 1883, Reformed and Lutheran congregations shared the church building. In 1925, Salem enlarged its church building. Manley Layman Peace Church, Berrysburg, formerly known as Union Salem Church and Salem Church, is a union church. The first church building was erected in 1844 and renovations took place in 1873. A pipe organ was added in 1912, and renovations took place in 1972 and 1975. Pastors include: 1844-1865 H. S. Bassler 1865-1867 F. J. Mohr 1867-1874 J. W. Lescher 1874-1882 A. S.
