Biographical / Historical

The Grindstone Hill Charge was formed in 1836 and consisted of Heidelberg (Salem) Reformed Church, Solomon's (Grindstone Hill) Reformed Church, Fayetteville Reformed Church, Funkstown Reformed Church, Zion's Church and Upper Strasburg Reformed Church. Pastors: Jacob Weymer 1785-1790, J. Philip Stock 1791-1803, James Hoffman 1807-1823, Frederick A. Scholl 1823-1834, Benjamin S Schneck 1836-1841, John C Guldin 1841-1842, Emanuel V. Gerhart 1842-1843, John R Kooken 1843-1845, Franklin W. Kremer 1845-1851, John C Bucer 1851-1852, John S Ermentrout 1852, Samuel Miller 1854-1856, W.D.C. Rodrock 1856-1859, Aaron Wanner 1859, David Heffelfinger 1859-1860, William R. H. The Heidelberg Reformed Church was originally organized as Salem Church in 1828. It became a union church with the Lutherans in 1833 and in 1861 a union Sunday School was started and existed until 1878. In 1877, the Reformed congregation relinquished their interest in the Salem Church and built a new brick church which became the Heidelberg Reformed Church. In 1766, Solomon's German Presbyterian congregations was organized and worshipped in a log church. In 1833, a brick church was built and became a union church (Reformed and Lutheran). Fayetteville Church belonged to the Grindstone Hill Charge in 1841, prior to which it was a part of the Chambersburg Charge. However, since 1866 the church irregularly belonged and was eventually dissolved in 1902. Funkstown church was built in 1839 and dissolved 1918. Upper Strasburg church joined the Grindstone Hill Charge after 1854 and separated in 1875. The church was dissolved in 1920. Zion (Kieffer's) Church was also a part of the Grindstone Hill Charge.
