Biographical / Historical

Trinity Reformed (Union) Church was first known as Springfield Reformed Congregation and formally began in 1745, under the direction of Christian Schugg, hence the name Congregation at Schuggenhaus. In 1747, the church was officially recognized. The first church building was erected jointly by the German Reformed and Evangelical Lutheran congregations probably between 1749 and 1751. In 1763, a second church was built and stood until 1816. In 1816, a third church was constructed and stood until 1872. J. M. Hartzell served as a minister of Trinity Reformed (Union) Church until he was asked to leave, at which time he and his followers formed Mount Carmel Church which existed until 1947. When Mount Carmel Church disbanded, the contents of their cornerstone was placed on permanent loan to Trinity Reformed (Union) Church. In 1960, the union between the Reformed and Lutheran congregations was dissolved and the Reformed congregation sold the building to the Lutheran congregation. Trinity began breaking ground on a fifth church building in 1961.
