Biographical / Historical
Rufus Calvin Zartman was born Nov. 10, 1856 in Somerset, Perry County, Ohio to parents Isaac and Rebecca King Zartman. He graduated from Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio in 1881 and from Heidelberg Seminary in 1883. Licensed by Tuscarawas Classis, Ohio Synod on May 31, 1883 at Navarre, Ohio, he was ordained June 3, 1883 at Wooster, Ohio by the same Classis. On Sept. 4, 1884 he married Hattie Eaton of Sandusky County, Ohio. They had four sons and three daughters, only two of whom survived him: Ruth Zartman Clapp and Josephine Zartman Dean Nichols. He served as pastor of: First English Reformed Church, Wooster, Ohio 1883-1888; Grace Church, Akron, Ohio 1888-1891; and Heidelberg Reformed Church, Philadelphia, PA. 1891-1921. During his pastorates he edited the REFORMED HERALD, a monthly "Devoted to the interests of the [First] English Reformed Church and Sunday School" at Wooster from January to December 1888, then "Devoted to the interests of Grace Reformed Church and Sunday School" at Akron from January 1889 to April 1891, and finally the HEIDELBERG HERALD, Philadelphia from May 1891 to December 1891. After his retirement he served as Director of Evangelism under the Board of Home Missions of the Reformed Church from 1921 to 1942. Mr. Zartman died May 14, 1946 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
