Biographical / Historical

Rev. John William Arnold was born December 20, 1924 in Halifax, PA to John Kelly Arnold and Grace Elizabeth Leiser Arnold. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1942 and Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA in 1945. He attended the Lancaster Theological Seminary and was ordained on July 20, 1947. He later studied Church History at Yale University Divinity School. In 1973 he married Joan Peck Arnold and they had five children. He served as pastor of many congregations including: Nescopeck-Mt. Grove Charge, Nescopeck, PA; Church of the Manger, Bethlehem, PA; First United Church of Christ, Carlisle, PA; St. Peter's UCC, Lancaster, PA; West Concord Union Church, Concord, MA; Trinity Congregational Church, UCC, Gloucester, MA; Bethany Congregational Church, UCC, Quincy, MA. Rev. Arnold semi-retired in 1990, but continued in the position of interim minister at West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, UCC, Gloucester, MA; Pilgrim Congregational Church, UCC, Merrimac, MA; First Congregational Church, UCC, Saugus, MA; First Congregational Church, UCC, Rowley, MA; and Federated Church-in-the-Cove, UCC, Beverly, MA. He permanently retired in 1999 for health reasons at age 74.
