Paine, R. Howard (1922-2007)

Russell Howard Paine was born in Lebanon, PA , March 13, 1922, the son of Dr. Howard C. and Mary (Bowman) Paine. He was the brother of the Rev. J. Donald Paine. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1943 and Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1945. He did post -graduate work at Harvard Divinity School, Yale Divinity School, and the Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia. He served the following pastorates: Christ E&R Church, Jamaica Plain, Boston, MA, 1945-1949; Associate Pastor, Christ E&R Church, Bethlehem, PA, 1949-1951; St. Paul's UCC, Manheim, PA, 1951-1959; St. Thomas UCC, Reading, PA, 1959-1986. He also served in the following leadership positions: Phoebe Ministries Board of Trustees, 1977-2003 (Chairman 1995-2003) Director of Capital Funds Campaign 1986-1987 Lancaster Theological Seminary Board of Trustees, 1978-1992 (Trustee Emeritus) Adjunct Professor of Worship and Preaching Penn Southeast Conference: Chairman of Worhship Committee and Church and Ministry Committee National Setting of the Denomination Board of Directors, Office of Church Life and Leadership, 1989-1995 Commission on Worship: Chairman of SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT Committee, 1959-1974; Consultation on Church Union (ecumenical), 1965-1975 Delegate to General Synods, 1959, 1967, 1969 (Chaplain). As a writer he co-authored the BOOK OF PRAYER FOR CHURCH AND HOME, contributed articles to CLERGY JOURNAL and the TORCH, presented papers to the Torch Club, and was editor of THE NEW MERCERSBURG REVIEW as well as serving as Vice-President of the Mercersburg Society. His first wife, Verna P. (Stonecipher) pre-deceased him. He died at the Phoebe Berks Health Center, November 18, 2007 at the age of 85. He was survived by his wife Doris T. (Thierolf) Paine, sons Cedric and Gregory, and daughters Meredith (Mrs. John M. DeVere) and Alison (wife of Dr. Robert S. Wilson).
