Biographical / Historical

Morris D. Slifer was born in Quakertown, PA., March 15, 1904. He earned degrees from Ursinus College in 1926, the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church at Lancaster in 1929, and Philadelphia Divinity School in 1939. In May 1929 he was licensed by Tohickon Classsis in Lansdale, PA., and was ordained in Pennsburg May 26, 1929 by Goshenhoppen Classis. In 1966 Ursinus College awarded him the honorary Doctor of Divinity. Slifer was recognized as an authority on worship and liturgy and was a member of the Committee on the Book of Worship as well as the commission which produced the Statement of Faith of the UCC. His pastorates included Pennsburg Charge, 1929-1939; St. Stephen's Church, Reading,PA.1939-1970; and First Church, Quakertown from 1970 until his retirement in 1978. He was married to the former Marion Shuler of Trappe on June 8, 1926.
