Biographical / Historical

In 1739 the congregation was known as the Church of the Swatara. the structure stood on a spot a short distance from a public road halfway between Fredericksburg and Jonestown, PA near the proposed line of the now defunct South Mountain railroad. The first reference to the Swatara Church by John Philip Boehm in his report of 1739 to the Amsterdam Classis and the Synod of Holland. the first pastor was Conrad Templeman who was a taylor from Heidelberg. Templeman's own handwriting is the first entry in the Swatara Kirchenbuch dated October 1, 1740 and reports the baptism of John Henry Capler.
