St. John's Evangelical Church (Cannelton, IN)

The church record book in this collection is somewhat confusing and is titled, "Kirchenbuch der Deutsch Evangelisch Lutherischen St. Paulus Gemeinde biz Rome in Perry County, IN, angenommen und unterschrieben vom 31st, Mai 1850." This indicates that the book is a "Church register of the German Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul's Congregation of Rome in Perry County, IN, adopted and signed on 31st May 1850." It's possible that the early entries in this book (1849-1877) are from this Lutheran congregation as many of the deceased are buried in Rickert Cemetery, Rome, Perry County, IN, and that cemetery has an alternate name of "Old Lutheran Cemetery." After careful research, nothing has been discovered about a St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rome, Perry County, IN, so perhaps the church did not last beyond a few years.

After further research, it has been concluded the entries from 1878-1886 are from Rev. Frederick Wilhelm Adomeit who served St. John's Evangelical Church in Cannelton, Indiana, during that time. This information has also been verified with the entries listed in the "Begrabene" or "Buried" register (p. 62-63) from 1878-1886. Each of these individuals are all buried in St. John's Cemetery in Cannelton, IN.

This record book was also enclosed in an envelope from St. John's United Church of Christ, Canleton, IN, and sent to Rev. H. H. Peters at Augustana United Church of CHrist in Holland, IN. No date could be ascertained from this envelope so it is unlcear when this was recorded. An estimated guess would be the 1980s or early 1990s.
